The Charting of the Sonian Forest

Looking for the perfect Christmas gift? The State Archives conserves countless treasures and one of them is a painted map of the Sonian Forest from 1661. This map is over 8 m² in size and forms the historic heart of the recently published book ‘The Charting of the Sonian Forest’.

The map is not just very big and very old; it has also been very well preserved in the State Archives. Ignace Vander Stock touched up numerous historical data, so that you have some insight into the history of the landscape and urbanisation in and round the Sonian Forest. Along with four authors, publishers Marc Carnier and Pierre-Alain Tallier recount the history of the forest and its cartography. Their stories are supplemented by and illustrated with a collection of maps which date back to the ancien régime.

The publication is part of the series ‘Cartographic and iconographic sources for the history of the landscape in Belgium.’ The book is 152 pages long and is available for 30 euros from The General State Archives in Brussels (ISBN 978-90-5746-639-7).
